Shopify and WordPress excel when the goal is to launch, sell, and iterate without funding a full product team on day one.
I reach for more custom work when workflows are unusual, integrations are deep, or the storefront is only one piece of a larger system—think Odoo for operations, or a bespoke Laravel admin next to a React client.
The honest answer is rarely “always platform” or “always custom.” It is what gets the business to the next milestone with the least waste.
